Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Minnesota. Our department has a long and rich history dating back to 1925 and we have an even more exciting future.
Our residency program is based at the University of Minnesota Medical Center’s East and West bank campuses and the new Amplatz Children’s Hospital which opened in 2011. These hospitals serve as major medical centers for patients with complex surgical diseases for the state of Minnesota and the upper Midwest. Our residency program also takes advantage of several outstanding programs in the Minneapolis metropolitan area including rotations at Hennepin County Medical Center and the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Our department also runs an ABA/ASA fully accredited simulation center where our residents, fellows and medical students are exposed to a wide variety of clinical scenarios that will prepare them for the new ABA certification process beginning in 2015.
The department is entering an exciting time with numerous areas of growth and expansion including:
- Expanding our pre-op clinic to see all pre-surgical patents
- Expanding our regional and acute pain services in both pediatric and adult patients
- Expanding our involvement in critical care and telemedicine with acute and critical care surgery
- Creating a new division of pain management, and finally
- We will be managing the new University of Minnesota Ambulatory Surgery Center that will open in 2016
On the educational front, we will be offering fellowship programs in Cardiothoracic, Pediatric and Regional Anesthesiology as well as Critical Care Medicine.
Finally, as part of a major research university whose motto is “Driven to Discover”, we are developing a research division that will focus on epidemiology and outcomes, as well as basic and translateral research in collaboration with other clinical and basic science departments in the Medical School.
In summary, this is an exciting time to be at the University of Minnesota! If you would like to join our team, please feel free to contact me directly or speak with any of our current residents, fellows or faculty.
