| Training tomorrow’s anesthesiologists, while treating today’s patients, is the mission of the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Department of Anesthesiology. Our faculty and residents provide compassionate care, not only in surgery, but in labor and delivery, preoperative assessment, postanesthesia recovery, and pain management.
The department provides anesthesia services at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, and at select affiliated sites. Faculty also work in partnership with Twin City Anesthesia Associates.
The department has close ties to the Center for Pain Research and the Malignant Hyperthermia Diagnostic Center, two internationally recognized research facilities at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Richard C. Prielipp chairs the department, and the vice chair for education is Dr. Barbara Gold. The program accepts seven residents a year, for a total of 21 residents. Postgraduate training is also available in the department’s accredited program in critical care medicine.
The department’s vision is to be the best educational and anesthesia training program in the Midwest.
Anesthesiology Program ACGME Accredited
The Department of Anesthesiology is now fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), in recognition of the program’s enhanced curriculum and alignment with ACGME standards. “Accreditation increases our national prominence in academic anesthesia,” said Department Chair Richard C. Prielipp, M.D. “It opens many doors for our graduates.” This landmark reflects the department’s status as a premier educational residency program in the Midwest.
Vice Chair of Education Named
Dr. Prielipp has designated Barbara S. Gold, M.D., as vice chair of education, which is a new position in the department. Building a stronger curriculum is Dr. Gold’s top priority. “We want to foster intellectual curiosity, equip graduates to grow with the field, and train physicians to be advocates for patient safety,” she said. Gold is an associate professor of medicine, and has been with the Department of Anesthesiology for 14 years.
