| Welcome to the University of Minnesota Department of Anesthesiology, we are glad you are considering our program. There is no question that your clinical experience at Minnesota will be as strong as any program in the country. Your cases will be diverse, complex, and numerous. Your experience will be vast, from whole organ transplantation to complex otolaryngology, from congenital heart disease to advanced neurosurgery cases. You will take care of premature neonates to octogenarians. Despite this robust clinical experience, our program has a reasonable time commitment allowing for a healthy balance between your professional and personal life.
In addition to our main training institution, University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, you will rotate to several other nationally recognized institutions. Your obstetrical rotation will be at Hennepin County Medical Center, a county hospital that has been a top 100 hospitals for eight straight years. You will do your pediatric rotation through Children’s Hospital and Clinics in Minneapolis, a nationally recognized pediatric facility that has only fellowship trained staff. You will spend time at North Memorial Medical Center to gain the perspective of a local private practice group. Your trauma experience will be at Regions Hospital, a level-1 trauma center in Saint Paul. You will have the opportunity to spend time at Gundersen Lutheran Clinics in Lacrosse, Wisconsin while rotating through your pain rotation. Many of our affiliated hospitals are award winning and all of them are exceptional teaching facilities.
In addition to your clinical experiences, you will be living in one of the best cities in America. We have a wonderful and vibrant community that offers endless opportunities for entertainment, outdoor activities, and cultural events. It is a safe and clean city with affordable housing. The University of Minnesota is one of the largest universities in the country, with access to arts and entertainment, division one sports, and terrific facilities including libraries, research labs, and recreational centers.
I hope you consider this program. Your three years of clinical anesthesia will prepare you for any career you choose. There is no doubt that after graduating from the University of Minnesota, you will be a competent consultant anesthesiologist who can handle virtually any case.
