Anesthesiology Administration Faculty

Dr. David Beebe

Dr. David Beebe is Professor of Anesthesiology and program director for the anesthesiology residency. He instituted several new clinical rotations recently, including regional anesthesia at the Sports Medicine Center on the Riverside Campus and (interdisciplinary perioperative service) at the main University of Minnesota Medical Center Fairview hospital. The upcoming year will require lots of attention for the next regular site visit by the Residency Review committee of the ACGME, as well as continuing to improve other aspects of the residents¿ clinical experience. Dr. Beebe also is extensively involved in research in the department, usually with participation by residents or medical students. Currently Dr. Beebe is collaborating with Dr. Lois Kehl (Ph.D. scientist) of the Anesthesiology Department in a study of the biochemical markers associated with low back pain, and Dr. Ranier Gruessner of the department of Surgery in two studies involving living-related liver donors and recipients. Dr. Beebe is also energized by challenges of international medicine, and lectured in Beijing, China this past year. He is also one of the directors of one-week teaching-education program scheduled this coming year in Bangalore, India.

Dr. Barbara Gold

Dr. Barbara Gold is Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Vice-Chair of Education for the anesthesiology department. She focuses on organization, content, and structure of all components of housestaff education, and synthesizes the disparate parts into a cohesive and consistent three-year learning program. To achieve these goals, clear objectives and uniform expectations are tailored to suit a wide variety of learning styles. Every summer an intensive daily Introduction to Anesthesia lecture series starts and helps assimilates all new residents into the clinical environment. After Labor Day, the educational sessions expand to include all residents and medical students and are based on core topics and subspecialty series. There is a wide array of formats including didactic lectures, problem based learning discussions (PBLD), and reading seminars. This is further supplemented with visiting lecturers, monthly Journal Clubs, weekly Morbidity and Mortality conferences, quarterly combined Surgery-Anesthesiology Grand Rounds, Echocardiography lecture series, monthly Senior Resident Seminars and specialty workshops (e.g., difficult airway, regional, finance and contracts, etc). In addition, all residents rotate monthly through the patient simulator and will be challenged to manage a unique case appropriate for their level of training. This translates into faculty-led educational offerings outside of the operating room 4 of 5 weekdays (the only exception is Friday). These didactic sessions are coupled with a challenging and diverse clinical experience to provide our residents with an excellent, thorough, and rigorous training. Over the next year, clinical interactions will expand with more formal preoperative evaluation clinic and pre- and postoperative pain management/ regional techniques.
