About the Department of Anesthesiology
Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Minnesota. Our department has a long and rich history dating back to 1925, and we are committed to excellence in education, research and clinical medicine.
Our residency program is based at the University of Minnesota Medical Center’s East and West bank campuses, Masonic Children’s Hospital and the new M Health Clinics and Surgery Center. These serve as the major medical centers and clinics for patients with complex surgical diseases for the state of Minnesota and the upper Midwest. Our program also takes advantage of several outstanding clinical rotations in the Twin Cities metropolitan area including rotations at Hennepin County Medical Center, Regions Hospital and the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
We have ACGME approved fellowship programs in cardiothoracic and pediatric anesthesia, critical care medicine (with the Department of Surgery), and chronic pain (with the Department of Physical and Rehabilitative Medicine). We have a non-ACGME approved fellowship program in regional anesthesia, acute pain and ambulatory surgery.
The Department also runs an ABA/ASA fully accredited simulation center where our residents, fellows and medical students are exposed to a wide variety of clinical scenarios and workshops.
The University of Minnesota is a major research university whose motto is “Driven to Discover”. Consistent with this mission, we have a very active research division that is conducting a wide variety of ongoing clinical trials, as well as having physician scientists who are engaged in the basic science of pain mechanisms, genomics and personalized preoperative medicine.
We are committed to excellence in quality and patient safety. Our new Quality Management division is actively engaged in several ongoing quality improvement projects that all have faculty, resident, fellow, and nurse anesthetist engagement.
Our department provides the entire spectrum of modern perioperative medicine. We have a robust Pre-Anesthesia Assessment Center that is involved with several enhanced recovery after surgery projects, pre-habilitation, perioperative assessment and management of chronic pain and many other ongoing projects. Our regional and acute pain service provides regional and acute pain management to patients of all ages. Our intensivists are involved with patients in the medical, surgical, and cardiothoracic intensive care units at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, as well as the medical and surgical intensive care units at Fairview Ridges and Southdale Medical Centers. Our multidisciplinary comprehensive chronic pain center provides state-of-the-art comprehensive medical and interventional pain management and is located in the new MHealth Clinics and Surgery Center. Our academic faculty has fellowship training in all subspecialty areas of anesthesiology.
